what is EBSA?

EBSA stands for Emotionally Based School Anxiety and is a significant challenge for many children and young people, often resulting in them missing out on vital educational opportunities. At our National Online School, we know that EBSA is not about truancy but rather a response to various underlying issues such as undiagnosed neurodiverse conditions, trauma, mental health concerns, learning difficulties, family loss, anxiety and much more.

With decades of experience we are able to approach EBSA in a unique way, supporting students with therapeutic online educational tailored to individual needs. This ensures that our young people receive the education they so deserve.

Understanding EBSA

TCESs approach to Emotionally Based School Avoidance

our national online school approach to Emotionally Based School Anxiety

By recognising that school and learning can sometimes feel like a threat, leading to physical and emotional reactions, we focus on creating a safe and encouraging space for our students.

Through our dedicated support, we aim to help children experiencing EBSA, re-engage with their education and thrive.

Integrating therapeutic support into education

We integrate inclusive therapeutic support throughout our educational framework to help students with Emotionally Based School Anxiety whilst also meeting each student’s wider needs.

Our RISE (Resilience, Interpersonal Skills, Self-Regulation, and Emotional Literacy) programmes offer students an understanding of their superpowers while supporting them in recognising and regulating difficult emotions and behaviours.

Behaviour as communication

Behaviour as communication

We view behaviour as a form of communication. Students with EBSA may have underlying needs that manifest through their behaviour. By looking beyond the behaviour, which is just a symptom of the need, we assess, learn and understand these needs, which means we are able to create a supportive learning environment for students with EBSA.
