One of the highlights of this year at National Online School was our family Picnic in the Park events, this was a special opportunity to bring students, families and staff together away from their screens to spend time with one another.
We held two Picnic in the Parks, one in the North West and one in London, allowing our school community the chance to meet in person, make new connections and enjoy a fun day outdoors. There was plenty to keep everyone entertained, from giant Jenga and Connect Four to boules, beanbag games, running races and toss and catch. More importantly, the meet ups gave everyone the opportunity to get to know one another in a relaxed and welcoming setting.
For some students, it was the first time they had met their classmates or teachers face to face. Friendships quickly formed, confidence grew and there were lots of smiles throughout the day. Parents and carers also had the chance to meet other National Online School families, share experiences and chat with staff in an informal setting. It was wonderful to see new friendships being made and families supporting one another.
One parent said: “My child is usually very anxious in new situations, but everyone was so welcoming. They left having made new friends and feeling much more confident.”
Another parent reflected on the day, saying: “We attended the Picnic in the Park in Wimbledon, which marked a lovely end to Jack’s journey at National Online School.”
One student summed the day up perfectly: “I have really enjoyed today playing games and meeting my teachers.”
As a national school, our students and families are spread across the country, so opportunities like these are incredibly valuable. They remind us that while learning happens online, our community reaches far beyond the classroom.
Areyauna Rais-Firouz, National Online School Principal, said: “While learning takes place online, we know that meaningful relationships are built through genuine human connection. Bringing our students, families and staff together in person helps our young people develop confidence, friendships and a true sense of belonging. Our Family Picnic is a celebration of those connections and the wonderful community we continue to build together.”
