MEET Phoebe

Before Joining National Online School
  • Phoebe was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dyspraxia, Developmental Co-ordination Disorder, Tic Disorder, and Generalised Anxiety Disorder.
  • She experienced difficulties with social communication, flexibility of thought, emotional regulation, social skills, and both fine and gross motor coordination.
  • Phoebe is aware of her high-functioning presentation and has shared that this often led to her needs being overlooked in previous settings. She expressed that she felt compelled to display emotional distress in order to access support, highlighting how inadequate and unresponsive she found the previous provision’s approach to supporting autistic pupils.
  • Phoebe stopped attending school in November 2023 due to poor mental health and emotional burnout, and she did not return. During her absence, she did not consistently receive schoolwork, which caused her to fall behind academically and further increased her stress. The lack of appropriate support led to a complete loss of trust in her previous SEND provision.
Phoebe Joins NOS in September 2024
  • Phoebe is now able to access Science, Maths, and English, and has regularly attended revision sessions tailored for students preparing for their GCSE's to help her catch up on missed content.
  • When Phoebe joined NOS, she was initially concerned about catching up after missing much of secondary school. However, she has expressed that the teachers have been supportive, built her confidence, and made difficult topics feel manageable.
  • Phoebe’s attendance significantly improved, and although she has had some absences due to mental health challenges, she shared that being able to watch lesson recordings in her own time reduced her stress and helped her stay on track.
Progression
  • Phoebe immersed herself in the NOS community, taking on leadership roles such as hosting assemblies, participating in the Student Parliament, and serving as editor of the NOS newsletter.
  • After a year at NOS, Phoebe is successfully reintegrating into a different Further Education College, just as she had planned. Her time at NOS helped bridge learning gaps and rebuild trust with professionals enabling her to approach college with greater confidence and reduced stress.
  • At the July 2025 Graduation Ceremony, Phoebe received a special mention from her English teacher, recognising her consistent engagement and significant progress throughout the year.
I also really like that NOS brings routine without the pressure of mainstream school – there’s still the format of lessons and breaks, but if I’m ill or struggling I can watch previous lessons that have been recorded, so the idea of falling behind is a lot less stressful.
