MEET Levi

Before Joining National Online School
  • Levi has a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Selective Mutism, and presented with challenging behaviours linked to anxiety and unmet needs.
  • He had significant barriers to verbal communication in school, often relying on gestures or trusted peers, and struggled to express himself effectively.
  • Levi presented as withdrawn in school but displayed frustration and aggressive outbursts at home; he experienced high anxiety, difficulty understanding emotions, and struggled with change and transitions.
  • Engagement was inconsistent, he had significant delays in written expression and literacy.
  • Sensory sensitivities, toileting difficulties, and reliance on routine highlighted the need for specialist support, which mainstream settings were unable to consistently provide.
During time at National Online School
  • Speech & Language Therapy was used: Regular direct and indirect input, with a focus on selective mutism strategies and modelling communication approaches for staff.
  • Levi was offered Selective Mutism Support which sees a gradual exposure to communication, use of trusted adults, no pressure to talk, and acceptance of non-verbal communication methods. Now, Levi engages with his learning and uses non-verbal communication effectively.
  • Levi received access to communication and Emotional Tools: Use of visual systems (feelings charts, communication cards, timetables) alongside strategies to identify emotions and develop coping techniques.
  • Levi was now in a Structured & Consistent Environment: Predictable routines, clear transition preparation, and minimised unexpected changes to reduce anxiety.
  • NOS approach Levi with a Holistic Support Approach: Relationship-based support with a key adult, combined with sensory adaptations and access to calming strategies and tools.
Progression
  • Levi's attendance is improving and is now at 62.1%, with 32.5% authorised absence
  • Positive progress supported by improved home-school communication has reduced Levi's anxiety immensely.
  • He has built good relationships with his peers and teachers and is better at regulating his emotions.
  • He participates in lessons and has a greater confidence expressing needs within a predictable environment.
  • Levi is on track to achieve strong GCSE results in Maths, English and Triple Science.
