MEET Harriet

Before Joining National Online School
  • Harriet had a diagnosis of Stargardt’s disease and is registered as severely sight impaired. Her visual impairment significantly affected her ability to access learning, navigate environments independently, and engage with peers.
  • Harriet was diagnosed with anxiety, depression and anorexia nervosa, and supported by CAMHS, OT, and psychiatric services. Whilst attending College, she experienced panic attacks and deteriorating mental health, which eventually resulted in medical advice recommending she stop attending.
  • Harriet struggled with sensory processing difficulties, including heightened sensitivity to noise, light, touch, and busy environments causing her to become angry, distressed, and dysregulated.
  • Social interaction and peer relationships were challenging and she became increasingly withdrawn and introverted.
  • Harriet was undergoing assessment for Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) due to difficulties linked to anxiety, sensory sensitivities, and social interaction.
During time at National Online School
  • Harriet was offered personalised learning with adapted resources for visual impairment (e.g. large font papers, digital materials, assistive technology).
  • Ongoing pastoral support and mentoring to support her anxiety and emotional regulation.
  • Targeted academic intervention, including Psychology booster sessions.
  • We offered sensory support strategies, including quiet spaces, reduced stimulation, and noise cancelling headphones.
  • We received support from QTVI, including accessibility adaptations, staff training, and orientation.
Progression
  • Harriet’s ttendance improved from 45.63% in Summer 2025 to 83.47% in Autumn 2025 and remaining strong at 75.52% in Spring 2026.
  • Harriet has shown strong academic progress in Psychology and Biology. Teachers describe her as hardworking, reflective, highly engaged, and increasingly confident in discussions and written responses.

  • She has demonstrated increasing independence and self-advocacy skills, including confidently communicating her needs and applying to university.
